How do the cards work?
The Tarot is made up of 78 cards divided into two groups: twenty-two Major Arcana cards and fifty-six Minor Arcana cards. Major Arcana cards represent individuals or states of being, like the Magician, the World, the Lovers, and Strength. The Minor Arcana are arranged in four suits: cups, swords, pentacles and wands, each representing a different area of your life, such as money and relationships.
The person asking a question can be called a seeker or querent. If the seeker is present for the reading, they shuffle the cards themselves, thinking about their question the whole time. If the reading is being conducted online or over the phone, the reader will shuffle for the seeker, meditating on the person and their question while shuffling.
After the shuffling is complete, the reader lays the cards out in a pattern, called a spread. The type of spread is chosen based on the focus of the question you’ve asked. The reader then interprets the meaning of the cards as they relate to your life and circumstances. Each card can have several meanings depending on where it falls in the spread, the cards surrounding it, and whether it falls upright or reversed. When read beginning to end, a spread often tells a complete story of where you came from, what’s going on now, and where you’re headed.
What do the cards mean?
The Tarot is made up of 78 cards divided into two groups: twenty-two Major Arcana cards and fifty-six Minor Arcana cards. Each card has an array of meanings, depending on the nature of the question, where the card falls in the spread, whether it is upright or reversed, which cards surround it, and any patterns visible within the reading. That said, the four suits of the Minor Arcana generally represent specific areas of your life. Cups: love and relationships, Wands: work and creativity, Swords: logic and conflict, and Pentacles: finances and the material world.
The Major Arcana cards are much more powerful and their meanings generally do not change. They can symbolize important individuals in your life, like The Empress and The Emperor; life stages, like The Lovers, The Hanged Man and The Wheel of Fortune; or states of being, like Strength, Justice and Temperance. Elements of the natural world and their applicable energy are also represented: The Sun, The Moon, The Star, and The World.
Is the future you see in the cards set in stone?
Absolutely not. The future you see during a reading is the end result of a situation if you continue to act exactly as you have been. Don’t like the future you see? Ask what you need to do in order to get different results in your life. You are always in control of your destiny through your own actions, choices and decisions.
Will you tell me bad things?
It’s helpful not to view readings as simply “good” or “bad”. They’re more complex than that. A reading will tell you what energies are present in your life today, and what tools you have at your disposal. A reading might suggest that a current situation may end differently than you hoped. In that case, the Tarot will also provide you with clues as to what changes you should make in order to mold that ending into one more consistent with your desires. For example, if a reading says you may not score a collaboration you’ve been working toward, it may also say you’re being too introverted and you need to network more. So if you make that change and come back for another reading, you will often find a different ending laid out before you.
Sometimes we receive information that is difficult to hear; perhaps someone close to us is being dishonest. But it’s more empowering to have that information and act accordingly than to live in denial or ignorance of it. As Socrates said, “An unexamined life is not worth living.”
Are there ever really scary readings?
Because you are always in control of your destiny through your own actions, choices and decisions, you should not be frightened of the outcome of any reading. A reading will simply tell you what energy is surrounding you and what energy will be moving into your life in the future. If a reading ends on a negative note, for example, suggesting future illness or financial hardship, it is simply a wake-up call for you to examine the way you’re living so you can make different choices to alter the end result. It’s helpful and empowering to receive such warnings so you can make changes to create the life you want.
Many folks are afraid of receiving the Death card, which can be pretty scary at first glance — a skeleton on horseback cloaked in black. But in the Tarot, the Death card has little to do with dying a mortal death. It represents symbolic death and transformation. It conveys a release which is necessary for growth and expansion — you have to close one door to open another. Sometimes the Death card is a signal that it’s time to let go of a painful relationship. Other times it marks a transformation in your way of life, like leaving a soul-crushing job to start your own business. And often, the Death card actually represents rebirth — the beginning of a new era. The earth-centered religions that influenced the early design of the Tarot saw death as a natural and necessary part of the life cycle, a step before reincarnation, and not something to be feared or avoided.
How specific should my questions be?
The more specific your question is, the more clear your answers will be. A specific time frame can be helpful — for example, “Will I get a job offer in the next three months?” is better than “Will I ever get a new job?” In a similar vein, “Will I find love?” is not as useful as “Will my current relationship lead to marriage?”
How can you read for me if I’m not in the same room?
We have both found it easy to read for people who are not in the same room with us by concentrating our energy on you and holding your concerns in our mind. We read for one another, and many other people, from a distance with great results. Sending us a photo to work with would be helpful if we’ve never met you face to face, but it’s definitely not a requirement.
Is Tarot similar to Ouija boards and stuff like that?
Tarot is considered by some an “occult art”. As an occult art or practice, it’s in the same general category as Ouija, but we do not consider them to be at all alike. Ouija claims to give people the ability to become mediums — to tap into the spirit world — often channeling dead people, often with unpleasant results. Also, there’s a tendency for one person in the group to play around and manipulate the planchette, the tool used to navigate the board.
In contrast, Tarot speaks to the hidden energies of the universe, and to the energies within and around us. Rather than tapping into ghosts or other less savory otherworldly creatures, Tarot gives us a window into the current circumstances surrounding an issue or our current paths. Sometimes the window conveys a clear message — do this, not that — other times it is vaguely suggestive. The type of response you get depends upon how clearly the issue is etched in the forefront of your mind. You ultimately control the Tarot energies, and they speak to your question with a clear response. What you choose to then do with that information is up to you.
